Adult Literacy Service

“I could not read and write.  I was talking to a friend one day, and she asked me if I ever thought about going back to further education.  I didn’t even know there was such a thing. I never heard of it…”  (Cathy, Adult Learner, Portlaoise FET Centre)

Does this sound like you, or someone you know? Then we can help.

The Adult Literacy Service offers free, confidential one to one and small group classes to support adults to develop their reading, writing, numeracy and basic IT skills. We offer a range of supports in Further Education and Training Centres and communities across the two counties to help adults that want to return to education. You may wish to work on tasks that may be challenging; such as filling in forms, reading the newspaper or reading health or financial information. Perhaps you have never had a chance to sit the Leaving Cert, and want to return to education to achieve this as an adult. We offer a range of services that can support adults who wish to return to education, regardless of their starting point. One in six adults in Ireland have difficulties with reading and writing; many are challenged by maths or digital skills/ computers so you are not alone.

Family learning classes aim to support parents to help their children learn. Some of the classes that have been delivered in the past include Maths for Parents, Irish for Parents, Wellbeing, Arts and Crafts and Health and Fitness. This year, given the challenges presented to families during the Covid lockdown period, our new course - Digital Skills for Parents - will be available from October in a range of locations across Laois and Offaly. This course aims to provide parents with a set of digital skills to support online learning and home-schooling, and introduces a range of online apps (in areas such as Maths, Irish, IT, spelling and general knowledge) that parents can use with their children.

You do not have to be a parent to develop your computer skills. We have various classes in the morning and in the evening, from beginners to advanced, and we are sure to have something that will suit your needs. Technology has taken over the world, and none of us want to be left behind. So whether you are starting out and want to be able to use your smartphone, do online shopping or banking, or are looking to upskill within your current employment, we will have a course for you.
