Special Needs Assisting 5N1786

The Special Needs Assistant module is a part time evening course suited to anyone who has an interest in Special Needs Education in order to pursue a career in this area, or use the knowledge for personal or family reasons. Special Needs Assistants require practical skills and knowledge in a wide range of behaviours and abilities. This course equips the learner with the knowledge, skill and competence in the practices and principles underpinning the role of a Special Needs Assistant.  It aims to enable the learner to work effectively, under direction, in a special needs assisting capacity. 

Throughout the course learners will:

  • Explore the role and responsibilities of the Special Needs Assistant
  • Examine the qualities and skills of an effective Special Needs Assistant
  • Examine the relevant legislation in relation to disability
  • Explore the rights of children with disabilities in relation to personal autonomy, participation and decision making
  • Learn how to relate effectively and appropriately to children who present with additional needs
  • Learn about care routines in feeding, toileting and general hygiene
  • Learn about maintaining appropriate relationships with children, parents, primary carers, teachers and other members of the multi-disciplinary team.
  • Reflect on personal practice working with children, their parents or guardians and colleagues ensuring that children’s individuality is promoted and that their needs are met.
Enrolment criteria:

Learners should have Leaving Certificate English or equivalent.  All assignments must be typed so it is advisable to have basic computer skills.

Work Placement:

Each learner is required to undergo Garda Vetting and organise his or her own work placement of minimum of 20 hours.

Duration

Starting Sept. 2019
Wednesdays 6:30-9:30pm for 14 weeks
