Skills for Work

Skills for Work (SFW) is a national programme funded by the Department of Education and Skills. It aims to provide training and educational opportunities for those in part-time / full-time employment. It helps them to deal with the basic skills demands of the workplace - to improve their workplace literacy / numeracy / IT skills.

The project is managed nationally by County Dublin and Dun Laoghaire ETB , and regionally within the ETB system. Laois and Offaly ETB is the host ETB for the Midlands Region, which comprises of Laois, Longford, North Tipperary, Offaly and Westmeath.

Information about SFW:

  • The criteria for attending is for those with few, outdated or no educational qualifications
  • Programmes can be delivered on company sites or at local ETB sites
  • Training / tuition (28-35 hours) is delivered to small groups (6-8 people) within a single company or to employees in a cluster of companies.
  • Programmes are planned to suit the employer's and employees' needs
  • The main cohort of people are those in the general operative, retail, caring, farming and service sectors
  • QQI accreditation at Level 3 is optional
